Holi – 6th Day of Urban Dionysia

The Διονύσια τὰ ἀστικά ‘Urban Dionysia’, are the last Dionysian celebrations of the Hellenic lunar calendar. They close the yearly events in boreal spring – austral fall – with other rituals, dances and performances. Each day of the Dionysia, I introduce, with only one sentence, a piece of performance art from anyone in the world, at any moment of history, accessible online, and that I want to share. This includes: theatre, opera, dance, body art and cinema.

Since the sixth day of Urban Dionysia happens on the day of Holi, the sixth sharing is Keta Mehta’s 【होली】 ‘Holi’, a 1984’s dramatic movie – starring young actor Aamir Khan – about the rebellion of students in a school during the festival. The movie is a film d’auteur which is very far from mass public standard and has a really deep image direction, from the theatre’s mise en abyme in the middle of the film – the film having been shot in the premises of the FTII, to the structure of the bully scene and its final consequences, many details bring this artwork to the category of underrated pearls.

Here is the 【list of previous sharings】 for the Urban Dionysia.
